Major General Abercrombie to the Marquis de Vaudreuil. Extract.

Acknowledging a letter of June 4, with enclosures relating to the capitulation of Fort William Henry on August 9, 1757; and stating that a breach of the capitulation on the part of the French forces immediately after the surrender was "so notorious, contrary to the good faith which subsists amongst all nations" that he has been obliged to regard the capitulation as null and void. He hopes Vaudreuil will recognize the justice of his proceedings, and will not so far lay aside humanity as to offer violence on any British subjects, comprehended in the capitulation, who may fall into his hands. Any such proceeding would compel him to retaliate on all French subjects, who are or may become, prisoners of the British. He expresses his determination to carry on the war with all possible humanity and not to deviate from that resolution unless compelled by a failure in that respect on the part of the French troops.

Regarding proposals for exchange in favor of Colonel Schuyler, Captain Lieutenant Martin and Surgeon Stakes, they were made to accommodate not only these gentlemen, but also Mr. Corriveau and others, who were anxious to return to Canada. As the proposals were not agreed to, Colonel Schuyler and the other gentlemen will be notified to repair to Canada immediately.
