Television special hosted by Charles Templeton and Pierre Nadeau on the national debate between the leaders of the political parties, Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Progressive Conservative Party leader Robert Stanfield, New Democratic Party Leader Tommy Douglas and Réal Caouette, leader of the Ralliement des créditistes. Caouette is not present at the start of the debate. Journalists Tom Gould, Ron Collister and Jean-Marc Poliquin ask the leaders questions about their party platforms for the forthcoming June 25 general election. Trudeau, Stanfield and Douglas give opening remarks. Stanfield eulogizes Senator Robert Kennedy. Addressing each leader in turn, the journalists question them on housing, poverty, disunity in Canada, the control of firearms, the tax burden and the American ownership of resources. Other subjects discussed are the Carter and Watkins Reports, Liberal Party plans for a Canadian Development Corporation, the economy, reform of electoral law, special status for Quebec, markets for Canadian wheat and the impact of American fiscal policies on Canadian industries. Trudeau, Stanfield and Douglas argue against special status for Quebec. Tommy Douglas explains his party's recommendation for a National Capital Investment Board. At this point in the debate, Réal Caouette joins the group. He explains his party's doctrine and particpates in exchanges of views on minority governments, recognition of Red China and Canada's role in NATO. The party leaders comment on military policy, their support for peaceful settlements of international disputes, ways of eradicating poverty without raising taxes, and amendments to the Criminal Code, with particular reference to abortion and the decriminalization of homosexuality. Trudeau states that it is not the business of governments to go into the bedrooms of the nation and interfere with the activities of consenting adults. The final question is about the Glassco Commission report and the cost of government. The four leaders deliver a final pitch for votes in the coming election. Pierre Nadeau thanks them.
