A hotel manager is sitting in his office when a messenger gives him a letter signed by Nick Winter, Detective, telling him that by this evening Winter will have captured thieves who have robbed the hotel. Satisfied, the manager goes to the hotel foyer where a fat old woman is arriving with her luggage. He welcomes her and arranges for porters to take her bags. Another guest who has just arrived greets the old woman and proposes to carry for her a leather wallet she has in her hands. Surprised, she declines, preferring to carry it herself. The three people climb the stairs. A manager shows the woman and the other guest to their respective rooms, which are adjoining. In his room, the male guest opens his trunk and shows the manager some jewels, to make him understand that he has some valuables. The manager leaves, with a concerned look on his face. Alone, the guest closes the top of the trunk and opens a secret compartment. A hand emerges. He gives it a piece of paper and then the door closes. The man leaves the room. As soon as the man leaves, another man, entirely covered in a black leotard, climbs out of the trunk and reads the note he was given. It tells him that there is a good opportunity in Room 19, the room of an old woman with a wallet filled with bank notes. The thief gets into the woman's room, sneaks up on her, imprisons her in a sack and ties her to a chair. He tries to escape with the wallet, but notices that she had chained it to the table. While he struggles to free the wallet, the old woman uses her head to hit the alarm button on the wall. The manager and his staff burst into the room, seize the thief and free the old woman. She removes her wig, and to the great surprise of everyone, presents Nick Winter's identity card. Later, the other customer returns to his room. Not seeing his fellow-thief, he opens the trunk. Out pops Nick Winter, who arrests him with the help of the manager. <6mn 50s>
