Nick Winter is sitting in his office, reading a newspaper, when a servant enters and announces the arrival of young girl. She gives him a note from a Mr. Richard, stating that sums of money have disappeared from his safe and he wants Nick Winter to come and see him. Winter reads it, observes the girl with a suspicious air and then leaves with her. Arriving at Mr. Richard's, he finds him in his office in the company of his daughter. Nick examines the safe and then leaves with the man. The daughter follows. The maid enters the room after the others leave and once again Nick is suspicious. The maid looks here and there and then goes away. A short time later, she goes into the daughter's bedroom and finds her ready to go to bed and sitting in a chair. Approaching her, the maid makes certain gestures at her head in an effort to hypnotize her and put her in a trance. The girl almost succumbs and sits down again, startled. The servant shows her hands and assures the girl that she did nothing abnormal to her, then she recaptures the girl's attention and hypnotizes her, succeeding this time. The servant covers the girl's head with a scarf and orders her out of the room. Winter enters the father's bedroom. He writes something on a piece of paper, gives it to the father and signals him to be silent and follow him. The servant forces the young girl into her father's office. Nick Winter and the father enter and surprise the girl while she is trying to open the safe. During their efforts to stop her, they realize that she is in a trance. She comes out of her hypnotic state and is highly surprised to discover where she is. Nick Winter has an idea. He borrows the scarf and her night gown. In the girl's bedroom, the servant waits for the return of her victim. Winter enters, dressed in the victim's scarf and night gown. The servant orders Winter to sit down and give her the money she has supposedly taken from the father's safe. Revealing his disguise, Winter seizes the servant. The father and daughter enter. <7mn 16s>
