The show opens with a report from Sue Stranks on Cathie Arlett, a woman who became blind after the birth of her second child. She has gone back to her profession, working as a nurse at the Queensway Carleton Hospital. Interviews include: Cathie Arlett; Lynn Taylor, Nursing Director; and outpatients Fred Burke and Robert Davis.~We look at the feature story, Gays of Ottawa, next. The Gays of Ottawa are asking for city funding for their social program. We find out why, and how Ottawans feel about it. Interviews with people on the street express various opinions. The Gays of Ottawa grant application is turned down by the Regional Social Services Committee. Committee member and alderman for Carleton Ward in Ottawa, Toddy Kehoe, explains her objections to giving them a grant. Footage of the gay community's history in Ottawa is given: demonstrations; picketting for gay rights; and clashes with the police. Things are different today. Staff Sergeant Bill Cathcart discusses liaison and lines of communication set up by the Ottawa Police. A look at how their focus has changed over the years to encompass a more social and counselling oriented approach. Linda Wilson, President, and John Duggan, co-ordinator of the Gays of Ottawa, explain why they need money. Suzanne Johnson of the Social Planning Council explains why the grant was initially recommended. Diane Holmes, alderman for Wellington Ward, tells why she supports the Gays and the benefits of what they are trying to do. Jacqueline Holzman, alderman for Richmond, and Toddy Kehoe explain why they cannot support a city grant. Linda and John conclude with the necessity of the services they are providing. Ron Bergeron, the co-ordinator for the Metropolitan Community Church in Ottawa, a church which focuses and serves primarily the gay and lesbian community, is interviewed. He talks about why society should have responsibility towards gays and lesbians; the stigma of being gay; is it a selfish community; the concern with self; the fear that society has for their proselytizing; and why his church has the charitable status it does. <30mn>
