In this episode, FOR THE PEOPLE examines the issue of racism. The show opens with a clip of Ottawa Mayor Marion Dewar saying there is a bit of racism in us all. The focus then turns to racism in Ottawa. How much racism is there? Recent government polls show that 31% of Canadians would support an all-white society. There have been a few racist incidents in Ottawa. Interviews include: Devinder Singh, a Blue Line taxi driver, who was insulted, sworn at and called a racist name by a van driver; Mark Berlin, a civil rights lawyer who witnessed the incident and took up the case - he wants to test the criminal code to see if there are adequate provisions to deal with such verbal abuse and he wants the Ontario Attorney-General to prosecute; Robert Richardson, a man picked up by police for the fourth time in a month while walking home; his father, Boyce Richardson, who decides to file a complaint of racism; Staff Sargeant Gary Rae of the Ottawa Police, who says the complaint was dismissed and asserts that Police work closely with the ethnic community. Footage of Rae and colleagues giving a talk to new Canadians about what the Ottawa Police Force is all about follows. An interview with Don Whiteside, Local President of Civil Liberties Association, on the increase in complaints he has been receiving. Footage of boat people and how Ottawans receive them. Interviews include: John Macdonald of Immigrant Services, who says that there are obviously some problems and David Lam, publisher of the Chinese-Canadian Magazine. He does not like the term "visible minority" and would prefer ethnic groups to be visible and deal with the problem head on. He also supports a Chinese theme park to celebrate the existence of Chinatown. The Ontario Federation of Labour's 30-second commercial dealing with racism follows, along with a look at their campaign. Ottawa Mayor Marion Dewar wants a committee on visible minorities established. Alderman Rolf Hasenack cautions against seeing~this as an instant cure. Interview with Walter Tarnopolsky, the Director of the Canadian Human Rights Centre, on: Human Rights Acts; resources used to discriminate; the public service situation; and changes to the Criminal Code. The show ends with a philosophical discussion on the problem of racism. <30mn>
