This fourth program with host Bill Galloway shows two films; one describes the painting techniques of Canadian artist A.Y. Jackson; and the other is part of the series DID YOU KNOW THAT. CANADIAN LANDSCAPE follows the methods of the Group of Seven painter A.Y. Jackson and shows his studio in Toronto; his painting trips to northern Ontario by canoe; Jackson searching through the wilderness for a motif then painting his rough sketches; painting the rural winter scenes in Quebec and staying with the local people; and Jackson returning to paint in his studio as he transforms sketches to canvas. Jackson speaks of his own technique, involving his "personal interpretation and intensification of nature". One of the National Film Board's first colour productions, the film was written by Graham McInnes and directed and photographed by Radford Crawley in 1941. The series, DID YOU KNOW THAT, looked at various Canadian phenomena in each show. It was directed by Gordon Sparling and eight films were made between 1934 and 1945. Third of the series, released in 1937, included: the first Canadian railway tunnel, built beneath the town of Brockville, Ontario; the "wicked" town of Sodom, Ontario, said to be influenced by Satan; Vancouver's "narrowest building in the world"; the Tiny Tattler newspaper in Central Grove, Nova Scotia; and the homes in Chatham, Ontario, of James Brown Jr. and real-life "Uncle Tom", Reverend Josiah Henson, both legendary figures in the fight against slavery in the United States. <30mn>
