Roll 10, Scene 3, take 1, parts A for Able, B, C, D for David, E for Edward, F for Freddy, G for George, H for Harold and Jay for J of an interview of a Colonel [MacIntyre], Canadian war veteran, about his experiences in the First World War.~Scene 3, Take 1: discussion with a brigade major about Vimy Ridge; tunnels leading to the ridge; working on the caves, putting in telephone lines; the Germans observing the Allies in 1914; Part A: attacks by the French in 1915; the British taking over the sector in 1916; the Canadians later taking over the sector; the use of tunnels; working in the dark; the running of telephone cables.~Part B: Vimy and the Germans from 1915 onwards; German defences; barbed wire; trenches; the importance of communication.~Part C: conditions on the ground; intensive training and organization; preparation for attacks.~Part D: He talks about Vimy Ridge and compares Canadian soldiers to other troops. Canadian soldiers were more independent. Also talks about the special skills of Canadian soldiers, the lack of interest in military protocol by Canadian troops and assistance by British officers.~Part E: training of units on a hill resembling Vimy Ridge; conversation with a soldier; spotting a low-flying plane which turned out to be Baron Manfred von Richtoven, the Red Baron.~Part F: clay model of the ridge; volunteers who took part in the battle.~Part G: four Canadian divisions of 100,000 troops taking part in the Battle of Vimy Ridge, with every province represented; signal to attack.~Part H: more on the signal to begin the attack at Vimy; concentration of artillery; low-flying planes hit by their own shells; bad weather; steady, successful attack; taking the crest.~Part J: Sixth Brigade; march of prisoners; the wounded; courage of soldiers; high cost of lives and looking down on Vimy, the "Promised Land".~Visuals for Roll 10, Scene 3, Parts C to H, show a man talking, with a background photograph of soldiers in trenches.

1. One of a series of interviews done for a television documentary series about the First World War.~2. These were probably done for the 1964 British Broadcasting Corporation series The Great War, produced in association with the Imperial War Museum, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.~3. CBC kinescopes labelled World War One.~4. Quarter-inch soundtrack recorded on 11919 roll 11, renumbered 8614-2587, at at 15 ips speed and version on magnetic edgetrack on the second part of 11867, renumbered 8614-3409.~5. Version on 11867 contains parts A to H and J while version on 11919 contains only parts D to H and J.~6. Soundtrack may match silent negative on reel 11944, renumbered 8614-2599 <40 feet>.
