Film featuring two trips to the Eastern Arctic in 1947 to 1950, and a subsequent visit in 1987, narrated by physician Dr. Joseph P. Moody, who was posted in the Eastern Arctic, Nunavut and Northwest Territories (formerly the district of Keewatin and district of Mackenzie). The film begins with footage of Moody's second trip which includes: the arrival at Chesterfield Inlet; shots of Ste-Thérèse Hospital built in 1931, the mission Church and the Hudson Bay Company building built in 1912, the only historic buildings remaining. Narrator comments on the absence of sled dogs replaced by four-wheelers; visit of Margaret Clay's gravesite, the wife of an RCMP officer who died in 1923; motorized canoe chasing polar bear; onboard Saviak, Inuit boat and sailing to Fullerton Bay; view of the RCMP headquarters; return to Chesterfield in the early morning due to boat damage; and the narrator commenting on the luxury of radio-telephone communication. This is followed by footage of Moody's first trip in 1947 which is comprised of: shots of seal-skin tents and huskies; close-ups of Inuit daily life; igloo building and family eating meal inside; wildlife including caribou and polar bear; preparing and boarding komatik; Inuk female softening kamiks with her teeth; seal and walrus hunting at the arrival of spring; placing meat in cache and preparing hides; departure for Pelly Bay; transport of sick people to the local hospital and of the seriously ill to Winnipeg by aircraft (Norseman aircraft (CF-ECF flown by world renowned Arctic pilot Gunnar Ingabritson who later died in a plane crash in 1956); in Pelly Bay, stone building built in 1920s by Father Henry; Inuit mothers come for immunization; patients onboard the airforce Dakota plane that flies into Winnipeg hospital; soccer game; spring ice melt; wildlife siksik, ptarrmigan, flora, peregrine falcons; guide Hakalu spear fishing; RCMP putting Peterhead boat into the bay; camping trip to Wager Bay; caribou; cargo arrives on the Rupert's land supply ship; Henry Boise; trip to the Kazan River and encounter with the Ihalmiut (People of the Deer); mounties fly to Knowlton Lake; Caribou Inuit at Arviat (formerly known as Eskimo Point) and site of the devastating polio epidemic of 1948-1949; and the flight back to Chesterfield Inlet; 12 Inuit, physiotherapist and flight crew aboard the Canso plane left for Winnipeg on August 12, 1949 and all perished in a plane crash. Footage of the 1987 trip reappears as the narration indicates that some customs have remained: the use of canoes for coastal family trips, community celebrating 75th anniversary of the first Catholic mission established in 1912, and the farewell tea with the Inuit. <51mn>
