This is a radio program on the character, life and work of politician Agnes MacPhail, as seen by her contemporaries. It begins with a biographical sketch of her childhood by host Anne Francis. Next, Wilfred Eggleston, Director of Carleton College School of Journalism, gives his impression of her work in the House of Commons. She sat first as a member of the United Farmers of Ontario and later became a member of the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation. Margaret Stewart, who wrote a biography of MacPhail, speaks about the dual nature of her personality. MacPhail’s sister, Mrs. Hugh [Bailey], speaks about Agnes’ childhood. Leon Trivett, one of her pupils, says she was a good teacher. H.H. Hannon, President of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture, tells how she got into the farm movement. He calls her a “born natural leader”. Eggleston notes that “her heart was a better guide than her head”. Dr. Eugene Forsee saw her as “a strong-willed woman, who wanted women treated on their merits”. Alec Edmison, Assistant to the President of Queen’s University, tells of her efforts and success in prison reform. Muriel Kerr, a close friend, tells how she got involved in penal reform. Edward B. Jolliffe, a former leader of the Ontario C.C.F. Party, notes that her interest in people as such “led her into penal reform”. Lilla Bell, her secretary, talks about her good taste in clothes and why she never married. Margaret Stewart says she saw marriage as submission. H.H. Hannon says that she regretted not having children more than not having a husband. Ruby Campbell says that she made friends for life. E.B. Jolliffe recalls the shattering blows of World War Two, her defeat in 1940 and the refusal of the government to appoint her to the Senate. Lilla Bell discusses her high ideals. <29mn>
