Interview of William J. Dalziel, an octogenarian, whose great-grandfather settled on the present site of Dalziel Pioneer Park. He describes farm life in the area circa 1885. The interview is conducted by Kenneth Higgs, Field Officer of the Humber Valley Conservation Authority and A.H. Richardson, Chief Conservation Officer for the Province of Ontario. Higgs introduces the recording, relating how Dalziel farm became an historical site. In the interview, Dalziel discusses briefly: his great-grandfather Dalziel's journey from Scotland with his 10 children, a boat trip that took 13 weeks; the condition of the farm when he arrived; the 'undershot' sawmill; pioneer farming practices; the farm house; great-grandfather's sentiments in favour of the rebels during the Mackenzie Rebellion of 1837; the spelling and pronunciation of the name Dalziel (like DL); a description of a sawmill with an upright saw; stone roads of the period; and the original settlers of the Dalziel property,the Schmitts of Pennsylvania. <20mn>
