Description:

Documentary clip on the ill-fated ocean liner Titanic. The captain of the Titanic, Edward J. Smith, is shown inspecting his vessel, posing briefly for the camera. Seen are various views of parts of the ship, including the promenade decks, life boats, and so on, and a few passengers strolling and sitting in lounge chairs. Baggage is shown being loaded. Well-wishers cheer as the Titanic is moved away from the pier by several tug boats. The ship is seen leaving.~The rescue ship Carpathia is seen at a pier with passengers on deck and several youngsters posing giddily. Seen are the captain of the Carpathia and one of the survivors from the Titanic. <5mn 40s>

1. Given the 90-year rule, this film was under copyright until 2003.~2. There are no credits or any indication of who might own copyright on this film.~3. This footage has long been identified in the LAC catalogue as Titanic. However, the article "Titanic Treasure Trove" by Mark F. Hall, in the Library of Congress Information Bulletin, May 1998, accessed online at http://www.loc.gov/loc/lcib/9805/titanic.html on 20 May 2012 indicates that the footage of Captain Smith is actually on the White Star line sister ship Olympic.~4. Formerly catalogued under the supplied title [The Sinking of the Titanic].~5. The names painted on the tugboats have been scratched out, which gives further credence to the theory that someone wanted to misrepresent the shipboard footage as that of Titanic, not Olympic.
