This accession consists of records belonging to each of the established series for the Canadian Conference of the Arts, excluding artwork and promotional material. A significant number of the records in the 'Conferences, Seminars and Forums' series, 'Subject Files,' and 'Correspondences' series were related to four well-publicized and well-attended regional confereces held in 1972-1973: Direction West, Direction Ontario, Les Rencontres du Québec and Direction Atlantic. Also prominently represented in these series are records relating to two major annual conference meetings - Direction 73 and Direction 74.

The 'Publications, Printed Material and Talks' series includes a significant number of brochures and program information gathered from arts organizations across Canada. A representative sample from various regions and artistic types were selected for retention in order to give a broad picture of the Canadian arts scene in the early 1970s, especially in cases of smaller institutions many of which are now defunct (ca. 2015).

Other noteworthy records in this accession relate to: the Hear Canada Signing competition organized by the Canadian Conference of the Arts and hosted by musician Ian Tyson; the establishment of the CCA's serial publication, Communiqué; the CCA's annual award, the Diplome D'Honneur.

The records represented here fall under the purview of two different National Directors of the CCA: Duncan Ferguson Cameron (1968-1971) and John Hobday (1971-1982).

One new series was created - Cultural Data Services - to house related records, including correspodences, lists, questionnaires, and surveys, found in this accession.

The accession originally consisted of volumes 1-14 in oversized boxes; verified March 1997. After processing, the number was brought down to 4.
