Lester B. Pearson retraces the remarkable early years of World War Two when he found himself First Secretary to Vincent Massey, Canada's High Commissioner to Britain. He recalls his feeling that the war against Hitler's evil, although necessary, would be long and grim. Pearson gives the view of a Canadian diplomat serving the war from Britain. He describes the following events: the German advances towards Poland, then Norway and Denmark; the decline of British Prime Minister Chamberlain and the growing popularity of Sir Winston Churchill in the British House of Commons; the Dunkirk evacuation; Charles de Gaulle's famous radio broadcast spurring the French to fight on; and the Battle of Britain. In June 1941 Pearson went back to Canada as Assistant Under-Secretary of State.~Film used shows: the British and French declaration of war; the invasion of Poland; Canadians landing in Europe; Russians in Finland; bombing and air raids during World War Two; and the ruins of Kingsmere, William Lyon Mackenzie King King's residence. <27mn 55s>
