Scene 1, Take 8 of an unedited interview of Major James William "M.J." Coldwell (1888-1974) done for the CBC television program INQUIRY.~Coldwell came to Canada in 1910. He lived for a short time in Alberta before moving to Saskatchewan. He taught school there before getting involved in city politics in Regina in the 1920s. He also participated in various farmer and labour parties and worked in teachers' organizations in the 1920s and 1930s. Coldwell became leader of the Saskatchewan Farmer-Labour Party in 1932. He was elected a Member of Parliament for the riding of Rosetown-Biggar in 1935, representing the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation. He held that seat until 1958. Coldwell became leader of the CCF in 1940.~Coldwell talks about: his support for sending troops overseas during the Second World War; his criticism of war profiteering; agreements with aluminium companies; the 60 percent subsidy for the [ship-shore] project; General A.G.L. McNaughton's removal as commander in chief by William Lyon Mackenzie King in 1944; Mackenzie King's being influenced by Britain; whether the requirement of an unconditional surrender was a mistake; and the white paper on economic recovery.
