Photographic prints and slides relating to the dive survey of the Ocean Ranger conducted in July-August 1982 and to the tests performed on the switches, lights and porthole glass by the Aviation Safety Engineering Branch of Transport Canada. These photographs were entered as exhibits 184-188..
Film and video relating to the Commission was transferred to Moving Images and Sound Archives and accessioned as acc. nos. 1986-176; 1986-177; and 1986-178..
The Ocean Ranger was the world's largest semi-submersible drill rig which, on 15 February 1982, capsized and sank in a fierce storm on the Grand Banks with the loss of all 84 crew members. Three inquiries, of which this Royal Commission was one, found that the rig sank after seawater entered its ballast control room through a broken porthole and caused an electrical malfunction in the ballast panel controlling the rig's stability. Based mainly on the recommendations of the Royal Commission, sweeping regulatory changes were made in training and safety practices and procedures offshore.
