This program is an examination of the Senate from the viewpoint of the Member of Parliament. There are comments by Max Saltsman, Eldon Woolliams, Bruce Beer, Tom Bell and Lewis Brand on the existence of the Senate, the process of appointing new members and whether they would accept senate appointments. Eugene Whelan advocates abolition of the Senate and discusses the salaries of senators, which are slightly lower than those of Members of Parliament. He comments on the view that appointments to the Senate are efforts by the government to get rid of troublemakers in the cabinet. Anthony Westell of the Globe and Mail comments on the lack of newsworthy material emerging from the Senate. There is a brief clip of Lester Pearson about senate appointments as means of kicking party hacks upstairs and rewarding party fund raisers. Senators Maurice Lamontagne, Grattan O'Leary, Richard Stanbury and Gene Rhéaume comment on the function of the Senate and their roles in the Senate. There is a roundtable discussion with Joe Macaluso, Herb Gray and Frank Howard about some of the more apparent problems with the Senate, including appointing rather than electing members, the consequent lack of accountability and possible solutions. Daniel Johnson comments that the Senate has a responsibility to more closely represent the provinces. <28mn 30s>
