Single-sheets, single issues or clippings of illustrations taken from the Illustrated London News from March 1843 to the end of 1905. There are approximately 367 sheets on which may be found more than 760 views or illustrations, of which about 500 are Canadian subjects, such as: Fires in Quebec (1845 and 1866); Montreal (1849 and 1852); andHalifax (1850 and 1859); the Prince of wales' tour in Canada, 1860; the Trent Affair, 1861-2; the Gold Rush in Nova Scotia, 1862, and B.C. in 1864 and 1868; various railway openings as well as accidents; floods; the Arctic search expeditions; vice-regal visits and activities; portraits; milary reviews and activities; sports; and scenes of city and country life. The clippings have been arranged roughly chronologically in twelve (12) folders: Folder 1, from March 1843 to December 1850 containing approximately 85 views on 34 sheets; Folder 2, from february 1851 to October 1854 containing 25 sheets and 62 views; Folder 3, from January 1855 to July 1858 containing 29 sheets and 65 views; Folder 4, from August 1858 to August 1859 containing 20 sheets and 35 views; Folder 5, from March 1860 to September 1860 containing 54 sheets with 96 views (mostly relating to the Prince of wales' tour of British North America); Folder 6, from October 6 to 13, 1860, containing 30 sheets with 55 views; Folder 7, from October 20 to december 1860 containing 22 sheets and 48 views; Folder 8, from january 1859 to December 1862, containing 41 sheets with 74 views; Folder 9, from 1863 to 1865, containing 23 sheets and 40 views; Folder 10, from April to November 1866, containing 23 sheets with 28 views; Folder 11, from 1867-1872, containing 33 sheets and 71 views; and Folder 12, from 1873 to 1905, containing 28 sheets with 100 views. Not all the views on the sheets are Canadian. There are also 4 loose sheets with 4 views on them, all of the Montreal Fire of 1852.

These works have been amassed over a period of thirty years from 190 to about 1940. They are stored with other ILN material acquired as parts of other accessions from the 1930s onwards.
A number of the clippings have been copied as part of the old Picture Division card catalogue. All the clippings are located in 0330-A257-02 (Folders 1-7) BARCODE 2000767300; and 0330-258-02 (Folders 8-12) BARCODE 2000767423.
In 1982, a listing of all Canadian views locateable in the current holdings of the Illustrated London News in the National Archives and National Library was compiled by Debra MacNeill under the direction of Jim Burant. This finding aid has been copied and placed on the accession file, as well as placed in the RSD Reference Room.
The Illustrated London News was first published in 1843 as an illustrated journal, and continues to publish to this day. It contains news, commentary and views primarily of English affairs. The ILN also contains views of events and activities throughout the British Empire.
