The story follows Jack, a chemist obsessed with the periodic table; his sister, Jill, a PhD in child psychology; his girlfriend, a photographer who is also named Jill; and his friend, David, who comes to stay. After Jack and his sister visit the mysterious Bardon Hill in England, Jack disappears from photographs taken of him and finds himself becoming more and more insignificant in his friends' lives. The tale weaves together the work of Goethe, Freud, Wagner, Brecht, the painting of Jacques Louis David, the life of the chemist Lavoisier, and the assissination of John F.
