Interview conducted for the television series THE DAYS BEFORE YESTERDAY : STRUGGLE FOR NATIONHOOD, of journalist and broadcaster Gordon Sinclair. He describes Toronto before World War One. He remembers how his own father was very "orange" and recalls that immigrants were routinely labelled as "kikes, sheenies, pollacks, niggers" and other racist terms. Sinclair talks about joining the 48th Highlanders and celebrating on the street cars on Armistice Day. Sinclair talks about the patriotic mood at the beginning of the war and the bitterness against European immigrants. Sinclair describes Red Emma Goldman as a "Yiddish mama" he met at the Arts and Letters Club in Toronto. He says she was a comfortable woman who spoke in comforting platitudes. Sinclair recalls Agnes Macphail, Howard Ferguson, and Black Tuesday, the day the stock market crashed in 1929. He describes his friendship with the evangelist Aimée Semple MacPherson and the appeal of evangelism during the 1920s. Sinclair also talks about covering other news stories of the day, including the Charlie Vance Miller Stork Derby case, the Red Ryan episode, and his exclusive interview with Tim Buck after the attempt on his life during the Kingston riot. Sinclair tells stories about interviewing Mitchell Hepburn and Louisiana Senator Huey Long. He says that neither man could hold his liquor and both were in touch with the common man. Sinclair recalls visiting the Dionne quintuplets shortly after they were born. <50mn>
