Interview conducted for the television series THE DAYS BEFORE YESTERDAY : STRUGGLE FOR NATIONHOOD, of John Read. Read describes the events surrounding the sinking of the Canadian ship, the I'm Alone, by the United States Coast Guard in 1929. Read was given full authority as Canadian advisor during arbitration by the British and French governments to represent the interests of crew members regarding liability and compensation. Read explains in detail how the hearings proceeded, how the judgement by Canadian Chief Justice Sir Lyman Duff and Mr. Justice Van Der Banter of the Supreme Court of the United States was made, and the final awards. Read points out that the real significance of the case was that it helped establish the rights and obligations of Canada under the Empire Treaties, to act as a sovereign nation in offering diplomatic protection to the crew. He states that "Britain recognized that conventionally Canada was fully sovereign. But at the same time, there were legal positions to be cleared up and the Statute of Westminster was designed to clear up those legal positions". <40mn>
