Newsreel footage shot in London, England of Private Ernest Alvia Smith, of the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, the first Canadian of rank other than a commissioned officer to win the Victoria Cross. Private Smith was serving in Italy when he won the medal "for conduct worthy of the highest praise and supreme courage and bravery equal to the highest tradition of the Canadian Army". In the assault on the Savio River, Smith and a companion moved against enemy tank positions, only to find themselves faced by a tank and 10 Nazi infantry. His companion wounded, Smith tossed a Piat which put the tank out of commission, and then with tommyguns, held his position and protected his wounded comrade until aid arrived. Smith was invested at Buckingham Palace with the Victoria Cross by King George IV on December 18, 1944. The footage shows: Smith walking from the palace, met by PRO photographer; close-up of Smith having his picture taken; Smith walking to his jeep and showing driver the medal; close-up of Smith's head and shoulders; Smith with medal; and jeep driving away.
