Press conference held by the Hon. Jack Murta, Minister of State for Tourism, to announce the findings of a cross-Canada study by Toronto's Longwood Research Group commissioned by Tourism Canada to determine the reasons for a decline in tourists from the United States. Also present are Allan Cocksedge, Assistant Deputy Minister, Tourism; Bob Parkins, Chairperson; and Diane Axsmith, Senior Vice-President of Camp Associates. In statements and responses to the press, Murta cites major reasons for the decline in U.S. visitors and notes that Canada's advertising does not properly assess tourists' need indicated by the study. As a result of the finding that Canada's major appeal is its cultural multiplicity, the Minister and his colleagues, the Hon. Marcel Masse, Minister of Communications and the Hon. Otto Jellinek, Minister of State for Multiculturalism, intend to announce a series of federal initiatives linking tourism and culture. In addition, Tourism Canada's specifically targeted advertising campaign, to be announced February 18, will be based on three themes: "old world" (ethnic diversity, British and French heritage); "new world" (dynamic cities); and "wild world" (the great white North). <60mn>
