General note:

Painting entitled "J. E.(sic) W. DesBARRES / 1722-1824". Copy by J. Gambardella (active 1920-1925) after a 1785 portrait of Des Barres in the National Gallery, London. The original portrait was donated to the National Archives of Canada in 1989 (acc. no. 1989-216).
This is a retrospective accession. The information about it is found in RG 37 "C" Series, Volume 337, File 1924-84 and in the Artist File 705-2072 item I-4.
Joseph Frederick Wallet Des Barres (1722-1824) was Lieutenant-Governor of Cape Breton Island 1784-1787, and published navigational atlas "Atlantic Neptune" in 1777. See Artist File 705-133 Miss J. E. Gambardella (active 1920-1925) was a copyist employed by the NA
