It shows: two men playing a grand piano; men costumed in togas acting; two men emulating a Laurel and Hardy comedy team talk on stage; a skit with men and women in a hat shop; an Ebeneezer Scrooge-type character; a musical number using cardboard cutaways; a courtship skit; men in devil costumes; a woman doing a dance; men in suits singing; another skit; a man in a top hat talking; women, or men dressed as women, dancing in the background; a man and a man dressed as a woman perform a skit; a man does a skit dressed as an old woman; a man shoots a prop gun; and the stage performers wave goodbye.~Leader reads "Roll 4". The intertitle reads, "The Arts and Letters Club Toronto. The Chester Mysteries. These mystery plays from the Chester cycle were written down by George Bullin, late in the fifteenth century ... Incidental music arranged and composed by Healy Willan". There is a visual of a man writing and laughing. The intertitles continue: "Ye Gentles, that come here to watch our play. Put, we beseech you, thought of us away. No standing here have we, in heart we kneel". There is a shot of a man in robes, walking around. "Solace woulde beste be scene. That we shape us to our suppere". Men in robes are shown eating. "Ah God mighte is, In yender starre lighte is". Men kneel on one leg. "Kneyle we downe in hye, And praye we hym of mercye. And welckome hym worthelye". There is a visual of a nativity scene, with Mary, Joseph and Jesus. "You royall kinges in riche araye. The highe father of heaven, I praie. To geve ou will nowe and allwaie. To yearrne the life that lasteth aye". There is more of the nativity scene, telling the story of the birth of Christ and the visit by the wise men.

1. Listed in kinescope inventory record as Mathew's (sic) Collection.~2. The CBC Kinescope Inventory Record instructs that the CBC Arts and Sciences Department be notified of any requests for this footage, but the rights to this material are held by the estate of Chuck Matthews, who died in 1990, represented by his son Graham Matthews (see related footage in the Arts and Letters Club fonds).~3. The Arts and Letters Club requests that it be contacted for permission to use this footage.~4. The Arts and Letters Club was founded in Toronto in 1908 an association for male musicians, artists, and others participating in the arts or as patrons of the arts.~5. The club hosted poet Rupert Brooke in July 1913.~6. It had a prominent role in fostering the work of the Group of Seven, holding an exhibition of J.E.H. MacDonald's work in 1911, Tom Thomson's work in 1915, and the Group of Seven in 1920.~7. Its February 1927 exhibition of paintings by Bertram Brooker was the first exhibition of abstract art in Canada.~8. It started putting on annual springtime drama revues in 1930 and performed plays by Merrill Dennison and John Coulter.~9. Its first club house was the Assizes Building, formely the Court House, on Adelaide Street. It moved in 1920 to St. George's Hall at 14 Elm Street.~10. Among its members over the years have seen Hector Charlesworth, Bertram Brookers, and Lovat Dickson.
