Frederick William Lock was born on March 9, 1824,in Marylebone, London, England, the third son of Samuel Lock and Elizabeth Isaacson. (His older brother, Samuel Robert Lock was also an artist). Frederick emigrated to North America in the late 1840s, and he lived in Montreal (1849-1853) and Brockville (1853-1859). Following the death of his wife, Emily Chaffey, in 1859 Lock returned to England. He remarried and continued to work as an artist. Lock died in July of 1885 in London.
