To increase the effectiveness and combat value of the NATO armed forces and to further the spirit of cooperation amongst the different nationalities, international exercises are organized periodically by the Supreme Allied Commanders Europe and Atlantic, or by the Allied Commander-in-Chief Channel, in conjunction with member governments.~They fall into two main categories: those is which no forces take part, called Command Post Exercises (CPX) and those in which actual forces participate (LIVEX).~CPXs are held to define, examine and solve military defence problems. LIVEX, those in which actual forces take part, are carried out either in a limited area or on a NATO-wide scale. Whilst there are several types of live exercises in which the numbers of participating forcees vary considerably, the general purpose is the same - to increase cooperation between the forces of different member countries, to test plans, or to study tactical and strategic problems.~Alexander Express was a LIVEX held in northern Greece in June 1993.~In addition to Hellenic Forces, this exercise brought together NATO armed forces units from the southern and central regions and also from the United Kingdom and the United States.~Greek national forces undertook the reception of the multinational ACE Mobile Foce (AMF) deployed to northern Greece on orders from the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), and coordinated the activities of their own units with those of the AMF. Ground force units of the AMF were airlifted from home bases in Europe to Greece, and NATO air forces provided fighter-bomber and reconnaissance support.~This film documents aspects of this exercise with the following:~A Turkish General seen with other NATO commanders (including Greek) at the parachute dropping exercise.~Greek Freedom Fighter aircraft making low level strike prior to parachute drop.~Greek Nord Atlas transport aircraft dropping Greek paratroops. The sequence opens with the troops jumping from the aircraft with the camera pointing back to show the mass drop involving hundreds of paratroops. There are two camera positions, one on top of the hill showoing the general view and the second at the dropping point covering close-up action of the paratroops landing and going into action.~Low level strike by Greek Lockheed 104 Star Fighters.~German Bell Iroquois helicopters dropping Belgian Special Air Service. The coverage includes an airborne camera with the troops in the helicopter, long lens coverage as the helicopters fly at very low level cross country and a mass drop of the fourteen helicopters in a cornfield.~Belgian SAS forming on the ground after the drop. This is a lively and realistic material and ably demonstrates the sort of armament carried by the troops.~Belgium SAS passing through a small Greek village.~An American tank strategically positioned outside a Greek village. This is good material for introducing the Greek countryside.~Greek population in village.~New British lightweight high speed reconnaissance tank, the Scorpion, on patrol in dense undergrowth. Saracen armoured car also in evidence.~German commanders in a thicket awaiting to advance on Greek village. Material includes shots of a British Signalman attached to a German unit. German motorcyclist and personnel seen advancing along a railway line before entering the village.~German troops advancing through the Greek village of Baniano. Evidence of local population including a Greek priest watching the proceedings from the church.~Grouping of armour towards the end of the exercise. This is an extremely good demonstration of massed armour including large and medium tanks, tracked personnel carriers and other vehicles. <17mn 66s>
