Newsreel footage of disposal of 3,500 tons of mustard gas by the Canadian army. The army loads an uncompleted tank landing ship in Halifax, Nova Scotia with the lethal gas and sinks it 200 miles out into the Atlantic Ocean. The ship was under construction but work was discontinued after V-J Day. The footage shot by Arnold Hague of Associated Screen News shows: two shots as train load of gas arrives at King's Wharf under guard; train backs into siding; danger signs on cars; drums unloaded; loading slings and hoisting drums into hold of ship; stowing drums in hold; officers of the Directorate of Chemical Warfare supervising operations; close-up of Major General Young, Quartermaster General, Canadian Army; various shots as drums are lowered and stored in the hold; drums suspected of leaks treated by army workers in rubber clothing; stowing drums in hold; man putting on gas mask and making final inspection of the lethal cargo; and longshot of LST as loading is completed and ship is ready for the trip. The footage shot by the Canadian Army shows: two officers of the Directorate of Chemical Warfare, Major Dewar on the left and Major Fenton on the right, who are in charge of loading and precautions; minesweeper HMCS Middlesex acting as escort; the gas-laden LST with minesweeper in foreground; the tug named Foundation Franklin towing the LST; two shots of the LST being towed; the LST starting to sink with seacocks open; and various shots of the scuttled ship getting lower in the water and it finally sinks. The sinking took place 180 miles southeast of Halifax, south of Sable Island, in a depth of 1,350 fathoms.
