Speaking to the English Speaking Union of the United States in New York City, Field Marshal Montgomery stresses the importance of understanding the feelings of the people of Western Europe; that in case of invasion the population of Western Europe must be protected; and that currently arms and equipment from the United States are vital to these countries.~Montgomery continues by describing the fully-integrated force of officers and men now established in the five countries of Western Europe and states that confidence must exist in the great allied principal of "all for one, one for all". None of us can stand alone and none of us are trying to do so today.~The more the British and Americans mix, the better for world peace. He then pays tribute to Eisenhower and states that he is devoted and would do anything for him.~The fundmental problem today is whether the Western nations can cooperate for a common purpose and gain strength through unity. The dividend will be enormous. It will be peace and freedom. <30mn>
