From Government House in St. John's, a preview of the ceremony to mark Newfoundland's becoming Canada's 10th province. Once the ceremony gets under way we hear:~An Ode to Newfoundland sung by a choir of mixed voices.~A reading of the Commission of the Lieutenant Governor.~Chief Justice Sir Edward Emerson administering the oath of allegiance of the office to Lieutenant Governor the Honourable Sir Albert Joseph Walsh, K.C.~The Honourable Colin Gibson, Minister of Mines and Resources, presents to his Honour token Canadian citizenship papers.~From Parliament Hill in Ottawa the carillon plays "Squid Jiggin' Ground", followed by a march past of the guard of honour and a royal salute. Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent welcomes the new citizens and quotes from works of E.J. Pratt. St. Laurent concludes his speech in French.~This is followed by an address by F. Gordon Bradley, the Ceremony of Carving the Shield by Louis St. Laurent (also in French) and a brief statement by Governor General Viscount Alexander. He recalls Newfoundland's regiment in World War One, and the Italian campaign under him in World War Two where the 16th Newfoundland Field Regiement of Royal Artillery supported the First Canadian Division at the Battle of Ortona.~The Royal salute and "God Save the King", "Ô Canada" and other music is played by the Band of the Governor General's Foot Guards.~A carillon recital, with commentary at intervals and voiceover, is heard including "This Canada of Ours" played and composed by Robert Donnell, carilloneur.~Among the interspersed comments, "... during the ceremony you may not have been able to hear the Prime Minister's chisel as it carved the Shield ..." <1h>
