This program is about Frederick Banting's discovery of insulin and is presented as a special feature broadcast marking the occasion of National Health Week in Canada. It is followed by a message from the Honourable Paul Martin, Minister of Health and Welfare.~Announcer introduces the program.~The narrator talks about Banting's early experience with diabetes when it caused a friend's death. A dramatization emphasizes the helplessness of medical science of the time in treating the disorder.~Banting's education is dealt with through dramatizations illustrating his absorption in his work and his relationships with friends and colleagues.~Banting's devotion and bravery during his wartime service in the medical corps is documented in the dramatized testimony of a sergent who observed him in action.~Banting's work at Sick Children's Hospital in Toronto.~Dramatizations of Banting's life in London, Ontario, and research into diabetes preceeding his own work.~Dramatized explanation of Banting's idea for the experiment to extract insulin from the pancreas of dogs in October 1920.~Dramatization of his request to Professor J.J.R. Macleod of the University of Toronto for facilities to conduct his experiment.~In May 1921, Banting and his assistant, C.H. Best, begin the first experiment, which proves unsuccessful.~The second experiment on July 27 succeeds. They work to refine and prove their findings.~Announcer closes, stating the necessity for the general public to keep informed about developments in the health field.~Brief message from Paul Martin, who talks about the value of Health Week and requests Canadian's cooperation in maintaining a high standard of health. <30mn>
