Newsreel footage of Canada's Governor General, the Earl of Athlone, and Her Royal Highness, Princess Alice, attending the investiture at the Combined Officers Mess of the Pacific Command (Jericho Command) in Vancouver, British Columbia. The Governor General decorates officers and men for distinguished service. The footage shows: medium shot of the Governor General's car arriving at the officers' mess; the Governor General and Princess Alice emerge from the doorway of the mess and take the salute; Major-General G.R. Pearkes, V.C., D.S.O., M.C., one of the most decorated men in Canada, receives the insignia of the Companion of the Order of the Bath, for long, distinguished service; Major-General Hardy Nelson Ganong receives the Companion of the British Empire (CBE) for long, distinguished service; Nursing Sister R.M. Hunter, RCAMC, receives the insignia of the Royal Red Cross for "highly efficient service in cahrge of an operating room overseas"; Mrs. W.W. Colledge of Vancouver, mother of Flying Officer William W. Colledge, who was killed in action overseas, receives the Distinguished Flying Cross won by her son "for his coolness and skill displayed when attacked by four enemy aircraft"; Sergeant David Livingstone receives the British Empire Medal; Sergeant John C. Ward-Moran receives the British Empire Medal; Warrant Officer H.L. Knox receives the British Empire Medal; L/Corporal H.H. Edwards receives the British Empire Medal; Private M.D. Summers receives the British Empire Medal; the Governor General and Princess Alice receive some of the guests; guests are presented to the Governor General and Princess Alice; Captain W.P. Dey, his wife and daughter Margaret admire the Member of the British Empire (MBE) he received for "outstanding work during Aleutian operations"; the Governor General and General Pearkes chatting; Genreal Ganong and Mrs. Ganong admire award; Her Royal Highness chats with Mrs. M.H. 1. Filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia.~2. Subject description is based on Associated Screen News Limited caption sheet, which indicates that no other newsreel companies covered this story. ~3. Caption sheet also states that the awards were principally for devotion to duty and efficient work. The event was strictly by invitation and informal. There was no march past, no guard of honour or saluting.~4. William Wilson Colledge won the DFC because he was attacked by four enemy aircraft, he shot down one and damaged two others before they shot him down.~5. A letter from Russell Muth, Foreign Director, Fox Movietone News, dated 26 May 1944, to J.M. Campbell, Associated Screen News Limited, Western Avenue at Decarie Boulevard, Montreal, states that the newsreel footage entitled INVESTITURE, sent by ASN to Fox on 13 May 1944, is badly under-developed and jittery due to some fault in the camera mechanism. Muth also says that another newsreel item sent to Fox, entitled SPRAYING FORESTS, could not be used because there were no scenes of the spray and that the Fox "Make-up staff considered these stories so poor, we had to turn them down."
