Bill Herbert of the CBC reports to the BBC from the Cowichan Indian Festival in Duncan, Vancouver Island, British Columbia.~The festival begins with a presentation in honour of American President Harry S. Truman. Truman is given a Chinook name meaning "Chief of Peace" and a hand-knitted, woollen Cowichan Indian sweater. Accepting for Truman is Troy Perkins, American consul in Victoria.~Johnny Bear, one of the oldest living Cowichans, gives greetings to English listeners.~Herbert describes the backdrop, costumes and colours of the festival.~"The Welcome Song", a traditional song of greeting performed in two parts, is presented by drummers and singers.~Herbert notes the speeches by the President of the local Chamber of Commerce and the mayor of Cowichan.~"The Thunder Dance" is performed.~Chief Fred Thorn presents a scroll and sweater.~A song about the bone game is performed. This game is one of the oldest Native-American/Canadian forms of gambling.~"The Owl Dance", a Yakima Indian dance, is performed by the women. <15mn>
