Recording by C.S. Jackson, longtime president of the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers union (UE) about the history of the UE. Jackson begins with the establishment of the craft unions in North America by new immigrants and the growth of the industrial unions in the United States and the struggle between the American Federation of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Unions. Turning to Canada, Jackson talks about the early history of the UE in 1937 when the UE was set up as a district of the American United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers. Other topics covered by Jackson include the no strike agreement during World War Two, the differences in provincial labour legislation across Canada, significant events in the growth of the trade union movement in Canada, his assessment of the Labour Relations Act, and the leading role played by the CCF and other Canadian political parties in the growth of the union movement. He concludes with a brief discussion of his internment during World War Two, the International Workers of the World and his opinion of other unions such the United Automobile Workers and the Steelworkers.
