Speech to the Empire Club, entitled "With the Canadian in Normandy". The President, Charles R. Conquergood, opens with a brief biography of Matthew Halton. Halton covers the war, mostly since D-Day but with references to the Spanish Civil War, World War I, and the Anschluss, illustrating his point that the Germans have fought so well because they are a "great fighting people and secondly, they are a police state and have to fight when they are told, but chiefly because they have been suckled on ferocity". We have now got to educate them, to do what Hitler did - "inculcate our ideas". He makes anecdotal references to the following: Reid Forsee, Ralph Allen, Dachau, the MacKenzi-Papineau Battalion in Barcelona, General Keller's exhortation to the third Canadian Division before the D-Day assault, the Regina Rifles, Rommel's tribute to the Canadians "against any other troops in the world, we would have driven this invasion into the sea", the North Shore, Queen's Own of Toronto, the Chaudière and Winnipeg Rifles regiments combining for the capture of Caen, the reaction of army companies to war correspondents, how men attack slowly rather than charging the German opposition, the conscription situation in Quebec ("nobody can say that the French-Canadians are taking their attitude because of lack of guts or physical courage on the battle-field"); Caen - the welcome by French people after the bombing, a tribute to underpraised British troops, General (Lieutanant-General) Horrocks crossing the Seine and Marne, and the post-war treatment of Germany. <40mn>
