Loizeaux, Elie Timothée, 1873-1956 : Elie Timothée Loizeaux, engraver, was born in 1873 to a French immigrant family in Vinton, Iowa. He became an apprentice at the American Bank Note Company in 1892, and was to work there for over 50 years. In his earliest years at the company he also took evening courses at the Art Students' League. In 1946 he retired to his home in New Rochelle, New York, where he would still undertake two major commissions: a special souvenir label marking the Centenary International Philatelic Exhibition of 1947, and a Bahamian stamp. Loizeaux died in 1956, and his family first loaned, and then deeded his tools and progressive proofs to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.. Hay, John, 1908-1989 : John Hay, engraver, was born in England in 1908. He and his family moved to Ottawa, Ontario where he studied at the Collegiate Institute, the Provisional School of Engineering of the Royal Military College in Kingston, the Ottawa Technical School of the Royal Canadian Academy of Fine Arts, and London University, studying mechanical engineering at the latter. Mr. Hay would also spend a five-year apprenticeship at the Canadian Bank Note Company, during which time he was sent to New York City to study drawing under George Bridgman. In 1945 he moved to Larchmont, New York, to work for the American Bank Note Company. He joined the United States Bank Note Company in 1962 as Vice-President of Research and Development, and would retire in 1973. Mr. Hay was also the inventor of an armoured tank periscope.
