Muriel Duckworth, former president of the Voice of Women (VOW) and a resident of Halifax, Nova Scotia, is interviewed by Gerry Rogers. The interview was conducted on Hornby Island, British Columbia.~Topics include Duckworth's background, including her work with teenage girls in New York and Montreal, her connection with the Student Christian Movement, and the two occasions on which she ran for office for the New Democratic Party in Halifax. Duckworth says she felt the issue of peace was so important that she gave up a full time job to become national president in 1967; she remained president until 1971, when the position was eliminated.~Duckworth points out that VOW is involved not only in issues related to war and arms development, but also in environmental and social issues which they view as related. She suggests that war is a way to expand empires and make money through the sale of armaments. Among the many VOW activities mentioned are the Halifax campaign to boycott General Electric, a major supplier of arms used in the Vietnam War.~Duckworth discusses the structure of VOW, its struggle to obtain and convey information, its relationship to the women's movement and its vital role in the peace movement. She defines the core of the organization as "a means for women to take responsibility for the human family". <1h 40mn>

1. One of several interviews of members of "The Voice of Women", a women's peace organization, in preparation for the film THE VOICE OF WOMEN : THE FIRST THIRTY YEARS produced by Pineau Productions in 1992.~2. This unedited footage does not contain introductions, titles or screen credits and the interviewer does not appear on tape.~3. The Collection File contains a release form from each interviewee, as well as a deposit agreement from Pineau Productions Inc., indicating that the interviews are available to researchers for consultation.~4. Interview descriptions are based on partial viewing of the videotapes, as well as on written notes and transcripts provided by the donor.~5. This interview was recorded on 20-minute Betacam videotapes.~6. A transcript of this interview is available in English.~7. Excerpts from this interview appear in the final film production.~8. Reels 102 and 103 were incorrectly numbered in the transcript; the numbers have been corrected so that the script corresponds with the videotape number.
