Claire Culhane, age 72, past president of the Quebec chapter of the Voice of Women (VOW), is interviewed by Gerry Rogers.~Culhane talks about her experience a a nurse during the Spanish Civil War in 1938, her "political record" because of a weekly vigil in Philip's Square in Montreal to protest facism in Spain, and her experience in the mid-1960's as administrator of a tuberculosis hospital in Vietnam. Culhane cites the influence of former VOW president Thérèse Casgrain and her desire to communicate the plight of the Vietnamese as the main incentives for joining VOW.~Culhane recalls in detail how impressed she was by the Vietnamese people and how outraged she was when the Americans took over the tuberculosis hospital as a military base. Her subsequent actions included a meeting with the Canadian Ambassador in Saigon, a meeting with the North Vietnamese Ambassador in Paris, her controversial report to External Affairs, her 10-day fast in the name of VOW on Parliament Hill, her joint vigil with Michael Rubbo of the National Film Board and chaining herself to the gallery in the House of Commons to protest Canadian involvement in selling war supplies to Vietnam.~Additional topics include the Gulf War, Culhane's current work with prisoners, her experience as a jew in Montreal, her views on peace, and perceptions of her as a radical. <1h 30mn>

1. One of several interviews of members of "The Voice of Women", a women's peace organization, in preparation for the film THE VOICE OF WOMEN : THE FIRST THIRTY YEARS produced by Pineau Productions in 1992.~2. This unedited footage does not contain introductions, titles or screen credits and the interviewer does not appear on tape.~3. The Collection File contains a release form from each interviewee, as well as a deposit agreement from Pineau Productions Inc., indicating that the interviews are available to researchers for consultation.~4. Interview descriptions are based on partial viewing of the videotapes, as well as on written notes and transcripts provided by the donor.~5. This interview was recorded on 20-minute Betacam videotapes.~6. A transcript of this interview is available in English.
