Nancy Pocock, a member of the Voice of Women (VOW) since the early 1960's who is currently working with refugees in Toronto, is interviewed by Maura Birley.~Major topics include Pocock's reasons for joining VOW, the 'peace train' chartered from Montreal to Ottawa in 1961 to urge government officials not to accept nuclear weapons, her 1963 visit to the Soviet Union along with four other members, which resulted in public accusations and dissention within VOW, the Strontium-90 survey to test the effect of radiation on baby teeth, campaigns against the sale of war toys, the Vietnam War and the Iran-Iraq War. Pocock says her work with refugees provides continual evidence of the terrible effect of war on individual lives.~Pocock notes that VOW was not formed as a feminist organization per se, but its members felt women should have a 'voice' in peace conferences. Although she had a great deal of personal support from her husband, she recalls the difficulties VOW members had in having to learn organizational and negotiating skills while not being taken seriously because they were women and because they questioned the status quo.~Pocock claims peace involves "more than an absence of war"; it means a complete change in values. <1h 30mn>

1. One of several interviews of members of "The Voice of Women", a women's peace organization, in preparation for the film THE VOICE OF WOMEN : THE FIRST THIRTY YEARS produced by Pineau Productions in 1992.~2. This unedited footage does not contain introductions, titles or screen credits and the interviewer does not appear on tape.~3. The Collection File contains a release form from each interviewee, as well as a deposit agreement from Pineau Productions Inc., indicating that the interviews are available to researchers for consultation.~4. Interview descriptions are based on partial viewing of the videotapes, as well as on written notes and transcripts provided by the donor.~5. This interview was recorded on 20-minute Betacam videotapes.~6. There is no transcript for this interview.~7. Excerpts from this interview appear in the final film production.~8.
