Margo Pineau interviews Kay MacPherson, former president of the Voice of Women (VOW) and recent author of an autobiography, currently living in Toronto.~MacPherson describes VOW as an organization founded by women when the fear of nuclear confrontation between the Soviet Union and the United States was escalating. She refers to a Toronto Star article by Lotta Dempsey which urged women to work for peace. MacPherson recalls the public criticism, family tensions and organizational conflicts experienced by VOW members in the early days. In her words, "We've been dirty reds and subversives and dupes and all kinds of things."~Additional topics include the 1963 international women's peace conference in Moscow, MacPherson's arrest in Paris for demonstrating against nuclear weapons, her 1967 visit to Vietnam, concern over military spending and cuts to social services in the 1980's and war in the Middle East. MacPherson explains the difficulty of defining peace, since the word is often abused by political leaders. <1h>

1. One of several interviews of members of "The Voice of Women", a women's peace organization, in preparation for the film THE VOICE OF WOMEN : THE FIRST THIRTY YEARS produced by Pineau Productions in 1992.~2. This unedited footage does not contain introductions, titles or screen credits and the interviewer does not appear on tape.~3. The Collection File contains a release form from each interviewee, as well as a deposit agreement from Pineau Productions Inc., indicating that the interviews are available to researchers for consultation.~4. Interview descriptions are based on partial viewing of the videotapes, as well as on written notes and transcripts provided by the donor.~5. This interview was recorded on 20-minute Betacam videotapes.~6. A transcript of this interview is available in English.~7. Excerpts from this interview appear in the final film production.
