Four-part series about television, broadcast during the CJOH news series NEWSLINE.~Many events in 1991 moved CJOH viewers to write the station to express their views about the content of news and entertainment programming. Among those events: the Persian Gulf conflict; the gruesome Paul Bourguignon murder; and the mid-evening scheduling of the feature movie WHEN HARRY MET SALLY. People were concerned with excessive violence in entertainment shows, with coarse language, and with gory video on news programs. They were concerned that television stations did not invite their participation in how programming evolved.~Unlike the print media's Letters to the Editor, members of the audience of broadcast outlets have no formal way to convey their opinions and criticisms. In turn, stations do not normally report back to their audiences en masse.~It was clear that members of the audience had concerns, and that they needed the opportunity to air them. In order to give viewers a chance to express their views simply and quickly, a telephone answering device was installed on a special line, and, over a period of weeks, the audience was asked during newscasts to call in with their concerns, criticisms, and compliments.~The community responded with nearly a thousand calls. Each was transcribed. Some callers said simply that it was nice to be asked for their opinion. Later, many of the callers were contacted for a review of their statements. Some were interviewed for this series, which also includes clips from television shows. <20mn>
