An account of the first year of the war. Shots of mobilization posters in Paris. Thousands of Parisians take to the streets as war is declared. Some looting goes on, but most are there to bid good-bye to the troops. Travelling shot of crowd waving at the camera. Soldiers - infantry and cavalry - move through the crowd while artillerymen load 75s onto flatcars. Shots of French troop train moving by the camera. A text explains the strategy that gave the Allies victory at the Battle of the Marne. An animated map illustrates further. Sequences on activity in French trenches, a small trench mortar is fired repeatedly, the famous 75 is shown being fired at full speed, a soldier throws grenades at the enemy, another peer through a periscope. Shown are explosions at the horizon. Very little action overall. One shot shows British infantrymen in their trench. Back in Paris, German prisoners of war are marched through the streets. The camera then focuses on damage to the Rheims Cathedral. German wounded arrive in Paris. Sequences on columns of refugees on road, walking, riding horse-drawn carts, on artillery convoys, cavalry, horse-drawn ambulances, etc. Last sequence shows Belgian refugees, men, women and children, arriving in La Rochelle, being fed, taking train for their new home. <16mn 25s>
