Second half of a film about the life of a hired hand on an Ontario farm. The next intertitle reads: “Being athletically inclined, he joins into the village sports”. Footage shows men playing baseball in a field. The next intertitle reads: “He is introduced to some pleasant company at a school picnic.” William sits with a group of men and women on the grass, with some fallen leaves scattered about. Another shot shows a dog in the group. The next intertitle reads: “And is very much impressed.” William is shown talking to a woman. The next intertitle states that William G. “soon gets used to ploughing all day long, but the first day’s riding on the mower is something painful.” Footage shows William driving a horse-drawn mower in a field. The next intertitle reads: “The Harvest Season – when hours are forgotten and the whole farm organization is keyed up to the business of saving the crop.” Footage shows a man adjusting equipment on one of several horses. William is in a grain field. A piece of grain is shown in close-up. The next intertitle reads: “Pitching sheaves all day keeps the doctor away. Germs can’t live in this sunshine.” One man pitches sheaves onto a hay wagon which is hitched to some horses. Another man stands on the wagon, forking the sheaves into piles. The next intertitle says: “‘Pitching On’ aids digestion and makes a fellow wonder if it ever will be ‘Dinnertime’.” A man pitches sheaves up onto the wagon, which is now piled high with sheaves. The wagon moves off. The next intertitle reads: “The wait between loads is never hard to put in.” William sites against a pile of hay, tosses his pitchfork away, takes off his hat, stretches, leans back against the hay and closes his eyes. The next intertitle, “Wonder if the apples are ripe”, is followed by a shot of William climbing a fence, walking over to an apple tree, picking an apple, cleaning the apple on his pant leg, taking a bite, making a face and spitting the apple piece out. The intertitle “‘Pitching Off’ in the barn isn’t quite so much fun” is followed by shots of a man driving the hay wagon while another man sits on the pile of sheaves and then a shot of a man pitching hay inside the barn. “Threshing – one of the few really dirty jobs on the farm” is followed by shots of a threshing machine at work in a farmyard, a man forking sheaves as the thresher blows chaff into the air and a close-up of a man with a hayfork. “There are always stables to clean” is followed by a shot of William shovelling straw out of a doorway. “And the ground is pretty wet when you cannot hoe in the garden” is followed by a shot of William hoeing a row of leafy plants. “Getting the manure back on the land is the hardest job on the farm” is followed by shots of a man driving a horse-drawn wagon into a field and then shovelling manure from the wagon box onto the land. The next intertitle states that William G. “learns that the hired man of today is the farmer of tomorrow in Old Ontario, and makes the first move by working a neighboring farm on shares.” William is shown talking to another man and then shaking his hand. “He has learned that the hired man on an Ontario farm, if progressive, has many opportunities, but that hard work, careful saving and good management are necessary to make good.” William is shown with three horses in a yard. “He finds some time for recreation and pleasant diversion, not the least of which is seeing Mabel home.” William is shown walking with a young woman to a horse and carriage parked by the side of a road. They get into the buggy and he places a blanket over their knees. There is a close-up of them in the buggy, as he puts his arm around her shoulder. <4mn 46s>
