A three part documentary celebrating the history of the Bell Telephone Company, and the advancements made in telecommunications technology on the 50th anniversary of Alexander Graham Bell's invention of the telephone.~Part one, WHEN THE TELEPHONE WAS YOUNG, looks at the early beginnings of the telephone. Dramatic re-enactments show the moment in 1876 when Alexander Graham Bell first spoke through his prototype telephone to Thomas Watson in an adjacent room, as well as Bell showcasing his new technology to attendees at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. Early switchboards are depicted and are contrasted to the modern switchboards of the 1920s.~Part two covers the history and the develpment of the telephone, including footage of installing telephone poles, lines and cables along the Florida coast, the Cube/USA connection, the Chicago/New York connection, and Bell Telephone buildings, both past and present.~Part three, SOME TRIUMPHS OF TELEPHONE ENGINEERING, showcases Bell engineering successes, including the electrical stethoscope, audiophones and hearing tests for children, public address systems and the recent develepment of a system for transmitting photographic images over telephone lines called the Telephotograph. <32mn 30s>
