Silent and composite unedited footage shot in the Union of South Africa during the first decade of the National Party's apartheid administration. Visuals show: policemen checking "pass books" of Africans entering white urban areas; "whites only" signs on public amenities; Africans protesting low wages and boycotting buses; and mainly white students picketing outside the University of the Witswatersrand in Johannesburg in protest against the racial segregation of universities. In separate interviews, conducted by CBC reporter Michael Maclear, South African Prime Minister J.G. Strijdom; Leader of the Opposition, Sir de Villiers Graaf of the United Party; and author Alan Paton, Leader of the Liberal Party, explain the policies of their respective parties. An unidentified Anglican clergyman and Professor Sutton of the University of the Witwatersrand discuss the recent banning of interracial worship services and universities under the Native Laws Amendment Bill of 1957. Also included are sequences on: primitive living conditions in African townships near Johannesburg and Cape Town; African mineworkers performing "gum boot dance" and Zulu tribal dances for white audiences; African women dressed in uniforms of various religious groups; rural African women doing bead-work, decorating the exterior of a thatched "rondavel" (round hut); street scenes with mule-drawn carts and market stalls; African workers constructing a business centre in Cape Town and loading cargo in Cape Town harbour; and shots of the gold-mining industry and an atomic energy plant. <60mn 12s>
