Part of a film about forests and forestry in Ontario. "100,000 Canadian families are supported by our annual tree crop. The picture opens with a number of strikingly beautiful views of our forest land taken from an aeroplane, followed in quick succession by scenes telling the story of fires and their effects. Methods of protection both with and without equipment are graphically shown. Special emphasis is laid on the economic value of our forests, attracting tourists, supplying the world lumber market, keeping the streams steady for Hydro Power and so forth. Ontario has a real treasure in its Forest Heritage." (1927 Catalogue description).~The film warns about burning slash without a permit, careless tourists who discard lit matches and cigarettes, and campers who fail to extinguish their fires completely. For each of these examples, the film shows the prudent behaviour which prevents accidental fires from being lit. A dramatization shows how citizens can help Forest Rangers in their work. Some tourists come accross fire smouldering at the side of the road; while one drives on to contact a ranger, the others prepare a makeshift firebreak. The rangers survey the forest from tall towers; when one sights smoke he calls the despatcher at headquarters who confirms the location of the smoke by calling another tower. The location established, rangers are despatched via automobile and railcar; when they reach the fire, they use a pump to fire water through a hose and dig deep firebreaks. In some locations, an airplane is used to spot and combat fires; the film shows a pilot locate a fire and then land on a lake to put it out. The film proposes that public cooperation must begin with education, and shows a teacher handing out posters to students who take them home to their parents. The final intertitle urges: "Every forest fire is a blow to this community. Let us pledge ourselves NOW to make fire an outlaw." <15mn 32s>
