The subject of this program is the teaching of English to immigrant workers in the Toronto area. Canada has seen an influx of immigrants over the past several decades. Many of these new Canadians have not learned to read, write or even speak English. Communication skills are vital to survival in today's cosmopolitan society. As a result, classes in English as a second language are being developed to improve English skills among immigrant workers. Lali Bhati of V & L Enterprises, an employer of a number of immigrants, talks about the importance of English-language skills in the workplace. Bonnie Gross talks to Vera Held, the coordinator of the English in the Workplace Program operated by the North York Board of Education. Such programs are important because more than 21,000 people in the Toronto area do not speak either French or English. There are clips of immigrant workers meeting with Held and learning English.Language:EnglishNotes:Detailed holdings information: -
