Television documentary on cigarette smoking which focuses primarily on the medical evidence proving the devastating effect of smoking on the respiratory system, heart and other organs of the body. At the Cancer Research and Treatment Centre at Rosswell Park Memorial Institute in Buffalo, New York, Dr. Robert Vincent and Dr. Fred Bach explain their findings, revealed in research on mice and through observation of cancer patients. Animated diagrams and the comments of physicians and patients suffering from heart disease, cancer of the larynx, emphysema, and lung cancer testify to the hazards of smoking. Noteworthy film includes an operation on a lung cancer patient and an interview with actor Jack Hawkins, victim of cancer of the larynx. Also touched on are the issues of: 1. Motivation for smoking - street interviews in Britain, Canada and the U.S. and comments of school children reveal the widespread prevalence of young smokers; 2. The struggle of quitting the habit - sequences on a mutual aid society for smokers and on a community anti-smoking campaign launched in Lindsay, Ontario; 3. Advertising - film clips and slides of early cigarette ads show the role Hollywwod played in promoting smoking; 4. Politics - comments by U.S. Senator Frank Moss and film sequences examine how governements have fostered the tobacco industry and the contribution they could make to bring about its demise. <60mn>
