Press conference held by International Trade Minister Michael Wilson and Consumer and Corporate Affairs Minister Pierre Blais to announce legislation on patent protection for the pharmaceutical industry.~In his opening statement, Wilson claims this legislation will help the Canadian pharmaceutical industry to be more competitive in international markets. Questions follow.~Liberal critics Ron MacDonald, Don Boudria, Roy McLaren and Rey Pagtakhan view the patent protection legislation costly to consumers and a concession under the North American Free Trade Agreement still being negotiated.~New Democratics Jim Karpoff and Phil Edmonston say this marks "the death of generic drugs in Canada".~The Chair and Vice-Chair of the Canadian Drug Manufactuers' Association express disappointment that the federal government has chosen to eliminate compulsory licensing of pharmaceuticals in Canada.~Judy Erola, President of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Association of Canada considers the legislation a positive move. <96mn>
