He finds that his boss is afraid of his superiors. His mother lives in her own make-believe world because she is afraid of the real world. His father's drunkeness is his defence against the world and his remedy for fear. Arnie's tension mounts. He goes to a dance with his girlfriend, Edith, and when he asks her to marry him she says that they should wait. He accuses her of being afraid of her parents. He goes to the washroom and Sam, the attendant, fawns on him in hopes of a big tip, Arnie knocks Sam down because he cannot accept Sam acting like his slave.
